This places Burundi in the top 10 list of countries having important untapped deposits of nickel in the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Musongati complex, the largest of the country, is made up of three units:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>a dunitic unit comprising the Buhinga plateau (approximately 6 km\u00b2);<\/li>\n<li>a peridotitic unit covering the Rubara and Nkeyuke plateau (approximately 23 km\u00b2),<\/li>\n<li>and a mafic unit comprising the subsets of Macu, Mwiriba, Mutanga, Makakwe and Kivoga.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Musongati laterite deposit is about 82 meters thick and covers an area of \u200b\u200babout 30 km<sup>2<\/sup>. Approximately 220 million tons of ore (containing copper and cobalt) with an average grade of around 1.5 % nickel (nickel equally exists in Waga and Nyabikere) were discovered in this commune. Chromium and platinum group elements have also been reported here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Burundi mining activity has so far been dominated by rudimentary mining techniques characterized by low production capacity and lack of environment respect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The establishment of a nickel manufacturing plant in the Zone Economique Special Burundi (ZES Burundi) shall benefit from having unlimited supplies of raw material which is competitively priced to make nickel products. The plant shall be the first one of its kind in the region. Overall, they are spread over 170 sites including 47 for gold, 120 for 3Ts, 1 for galena, 1 for amethyst, 1 for bauxite, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They are mainly exploited in provinces like Cibitoke and Bubanza (west); Kirundo, Ngozi, Muyinga, Kayanza (north) but also in Ruyigi (east) and Bururi (south).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The prospective studies available reveal that Cimba site (516.9 km<sup>2)<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>in Cibitoke province accounts 14 tons of gold, 36,000 tons of copper and 16 tons of silver.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, there are many imperfections in mining companies\u2019 operation. To come out of this, the State of Burundi has undertaken far-reaching reforms in the sector. In 2019, the exportation, by this country, of the hard silver-grey metal and related ones was worth US $ 10.1 million i.e. 5.59 % of global exports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tantalum is one of the rarest and more sought after metals.
