Karera River Falls
The Karera Falls is Nestled in a Forest Passage of Very Tall African Tulip Trees. All Around there is a Savannah. A Variety Birds and Monkeys Live in the Passage, That Connects the Network of Waterfalls with Sometimes Steep Paths
German fault
To the south-east of the Shanga Falls, the “German Fault” has Spectacular Cliffs Carved into the Escarpment this marks the separation of the central plateaus and the Kumoso valley. The Fault offers a beautiful view of the valley from the Nyakazu plateau at an altitude of about 1,950 m. Its Edges and Ravines Preserve Rich Vegetation of precious mountain trees. Many Animals and Birds live in the Fault, including the green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) and Alexander’s starling (Onychognathus morio) in the air. The site Owes its Name to the Arrival of a German Military Force on the Nyakazu plateau at the beginning of the 20th century to control the eastern border.
Source of the Nile
The Nile Source Site is Announced by a Large Stone Pyramid perched on the hillside of Mount Gikizi (2,145 m). It was Erected in 1938, Paying Homage to the Egyptian Pyramids by Mr. Burkheart Waldecker a German National who located the site in 1937 and confirmed it as the southernmost source of the Nile River. It bears the Latin inscription “Caput Nili”, which indicates the End of the Long Quest to Find the “Source of the Nile”.
When you are standing next to the pyramid, you have a superb 360° view of the surrounding mountains (Gikizi, Kibimbi). This is a great destination for hiking.
Bugarama
Only 37 km from Bujumbura towards the north-west (RN1) on the Edge of the Kibera Ridge, is located Bugarama on Junction of Burundi’s Main Roads to the Centre of the Country and Rwanda. A Strategic Gateway for Exchanges between the ” Countryside ” and the “Economic Capital”. Bugarama Town deserves an excursion for Spectacular Scenery on the Mountain Road and the Wonderful View of the Rift Valley from the Kibera Ridge. It is a Connecting Point for the Routes towards Kayanza and Ngozi and Muramvya and Gitega.
Kibira National Park
Kibira National Park begins on the 2,600m High Ridge close to the Bugarama junction that you reach after a Spectacular Mountain Ascent less than 50 kms from Bujumbura. The park contains the Mugamba and Kirimiro hills (2,000-2,200 m), The Congo-Nile ridge and the Kibira Forests Huge Trees. The area has some of Most Beautiful Panoramas in Burundi! The Immense Forest and High Attitudes give a Magical Sense of History and Freedom. This is a World Class Area for Trekking.
